LIFE - A Short Doc
Directed, Edited, Shot and Written by kieran.
Initially this piece began with a brief within my Film & Media course requesting for a 10-15 minute long short video production themed around the concept of 'Journeys'. The idea generation process was lengthy since I wanted to select an idea which had the opportunity to be meaningful & professional but also creatively empowering & challenging. The biggest journey we all undergo is life itself... through the trials and tribulations, its a fascinating topic. My concern was always that covering the journey of life would be far too large & complex a topic to cover in such a short time... but, perhaps exploring how humans react & change as they endure the journey would not only be more digestible but more relatable and emotive too. The goal was never to cover the process of ageing since I had very little interest in doing that, as previously mentioned, I wanted to make something meaningful with true emotions throughout it. The idea went through many different iterations before finally landing on pretty much what it became. This short documentary felt risky in many ways, partly because the narrative couldn't be controlled by me but instead the three interviewees therefore I needed an insightful set of questions which could allow me to piece together the many emotions & topics in the final edit. At the climax of the short documentary, I ask each person a question nobody can seem to answer: What is the meaning of life? I predicted that Hollie would struggle gathering an answer, Kate slightly less-so and Richard would have a greater understanding as somebody who has the most life experience... but, I was entirely incorrect which I felt to be rather poetic as proof that nobody knows its meaning.
